Greenhouse Gas Emissions

Most of our operations are primarily assembly facilities and are not considered energy intensive.  Therefore, Black & Decker does not currently participate in greenhouse gas trading programs.  We indirectly monitor greenhouse emissions through our reporting of energy emissions.  The graph below is an estimate of direct greenhouse emissions from our manufacturing and assembly operations, in relation to total sales.

Black & Decker has responded to Round 5 of the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP5). According to its website, “The Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) is an independent not-for-profit organization aiming to create a lasting relationship between shareholders and corporations regarding the implications for shareholder value and commercial operations presented by climate change. Its goal is to facilitate a dialogue, supported by quality information, from which a rational response to climate change will emerge." Approximately 2,400 of the world’s largest corporations have responded to CDP5. The CDP released the responses of all participants, including Black & Decker, in September, 2007. Responses are available on the CDP website at www.cdproject.net

Almost all direct CO2 emissions from our operations are from the combustion of natural gas.  Propane and fuel oil are minor contributors.  (Note: This graph reflects a different methodology than the CDP5 submission, discussed above.)
