Manufacturing Practices

Our Approach

Black & Decker seeks to continually reduce the environmental impact of its manufacturing operations.

Policy and Practice

The following practices have led to improvements in the environmental profile of our manufacturing system, including substantial reductions in the quantity of solid waste sent to landfills and in fugitive and stack air emissions:

  • Conversion from solvent based to aqueous and powder based surface coatings;
  • Conversion from solvent to aqueous cleaning systems;
  • Ongoing identification of opportunities for further reductions in the quantity and toxicity of manufacturing wastes;
  • Careful reviews of all facilities to which the company sends manufacturing waste material for management with preference given to waste management technologies that recycle or otherwise beneficially reuse process waste material;
  • Periodic audits of outside manufacturing firms that supply product to Black & Decker, to assure that their operations are conducted in an environmentally responsible manner; and,
  • Our policy that no Ozone Depleting Substances (ODS) are to be used in Black & Decker manufacturing operations.
