Our Approach
Black & Decker believes strongly in environmental sustainability and, therefore, devotes significant resources to this effort, from the highest levels of the Corporation to each operating unit.
Policy and Practice
Environmental Policy is implemented under the oversight of the Vice President of Environmental Affairs, who is the company’s chief environmental official and reports to the Senior Vice President and General Counsel. The Vice President of Environmental Affairs is generally supported by a staff of four environmental professionals. In addition, each operating unit has at least one person designated as Environmental and/or Safety Coordinator.
To fulfill its responsibility, the Environmental, Health and Safety (EHS) organization:
- Provides strategic environment, health and safety support and guidance;
- Develops operational EHS policies and procedures;
- Provides technical, legal and EHS operational information, as well as training and support to business units and facilities;
- Conducts EHS assessments of operating units and facilities;
- Provides EHS training to facility personnel;
- Serves as a conduit for sharing EHS best practices; maintains a company-wide EHS Intranet;
- Collects and disseminates information on corporate EHS performance;
- Approves off-site locations for the management of hazardous waste; develops contracts with firms that manage waste;
- Manages remediation of historically contaminated properties;
- Conducts environmental reviews for acquisitions of new properties, businesses or facilities;
- Supports facilities and business units in implementing improved Environmental Management Systems, including ISO14001; and
- Provides EHS interface with government agencies, trade groups, and environmental organizations.
