Our Approach
Black & Decker seeks to reduce the quantity of waste generated, and monitors waste at manufacturing sites annually.
Policy and Practice
Black & Decker monitors the waste generated from its manufacturing sites through a system of on-line annual reporting. Each facility submits data on the quantity and source of each waste stream generated, who transported and managed the waste off-site, and how the waste was processed. The process solid wastes are characterized as hazardous or non-hazardous based on the US EPA definitions. Facilities also report on the quantity of scrap metal generated and the quantity of paper and plastics recycled.
For information on legal proceedings related to discharge of substances into the environment, see Item 3 and Item 1(c) of Part I of the 2006 Form 10-K filed with the SEC.
RCRA Hazardous Waste Generated Tons Annually
|
 |
The majority of hazardous waste is generated either from the treatment of electroplating rinse waters or from wastewaters and waste oils contaminated with lead from the processing of brass.
The total quantity of hazardous waste generated has continued to decline slightly even as total sales have risen. |
Non-Hazardous Process Waste Tons Annually
|
 |
The most significant non-hazardous wastes are waste oils and waste oil/water mixtures. These waste streams are typically recycled or burned for energy recovery.
